Instead of taking the bag of diamonds with them, and figuring out how to return it later, Recker just left the bag there. Jones left an anonymous tip with the police department about hearing gunshots at that location. When the police arrived, they’d find the bag and return it through proper channels.

Besides, they had other things to worry about at the moment. Recker and Haley rushed straight back to the office, wanting to know what was going on with this latest robbery. They barged into the office, with Jones swiveling his chair around to face them as they entered the room.

“What’s going on here?” Recker asked.

“It’s just as I told you,” Jones answered. “Another robbery went down.”

“Where?”

Jones pointed to the screen on the wall, where he was starting to project everything. There was a red circle on a map to indicate where the robbery happened.

“It happened here.”

“Can you circle where all the other robberies went down?”

Jones nodded and immediately did as was requested. “Here are the other three. I also circled today’s other robbery. You’ll see that is the blue circle.”

“Monty’s Jewelry is completely across town from this other robbery today,” Haley said.

“How do you know we got the wrong ones?” Recker asked.

“There were four men you went after today,” Jones replied. “There were three with this one that we missed.”

“Not exactly foolproof evidence.”

“No, but there’s also the fact that I ran the license plate on the white car you guys were following.”

“Stolen?”

Jones shook his head. “No. It came back to Stephen Sneed.”

Recker glared at him, like he was waiting for a bit more information. “And? Is that significant? Who’s Stephen Sneed?”

“Because he was the driver of the white car. It was his.”

Recker slightly tilted his head back. He could already see it.

“The guy used his own car to do the job?” Haley asked.

“That’s correct,” Jones answered.

Recker then moved his head around until he lowered it and looked at the ground. He knew Jones was right. That was all the information that he needed.

“I’m assuming you know what I’m referring to.”

Recker sighed. “The other robberies all used stolen cars.”

Jones put his index finger in the air. “And, I was already able to get a license plate photo off a nearby camera where the car was parked on this new robbery.”

“And you ran it?”

“I did. It comes back as stolen.”

Recker closed his eyes, then rubbed his forehead, before running his hands down his face.

“So, what… it’s just some kind of coincidence that these two crews struck at the same time?” Haley asked. “Or near the same time?”

“You know I don’t believe in those,” Recker replied.

“Coordinated?”

“Something’s rotten in Denmark.”

Recker could only shake his head, for what seemed like a really long time. He then started pacing around the office, periodically looking back up at the screen on the wall.

“Do we know anything about the guys we took down?” Recker asked.

Jones nodded. “We do. I’ll put them on the screen now.”

As the four faces appeared on the screen, Recker stopped and walked over in front of it to get a better look.
